Indie Comics Underground spoke to Andy Smith about his new project - 1st Man - Now funding on Indiegogo
Your new project 1st Man is now funding on IndieGogo. What is 1st man?
1stMan is the story of Luke Henry, a freshman in college, who has been chosen to hold the last Essence of the 10. The 10 are a collective of powerful Essences that were spread across the cosmos and inhabit a sole individual on different worlds. When combined they would make the sole holder very powerful. While holding the Essence, Luke can transform into Apollo the 1stMan. Monarch is the villain of the story that is looking to gain this enormous power and has collected the other 9 Essences that are spread throughout the cosmos inhabiting a single host on their respective planets. With only one Essence left to collect he is coming to Earth to get the last one. Penumbra is helping Monarch but she has her own agenda as she holds a special tie to the Essence that inhabits Luke Henry.
With this being a return for 1st Man, will readers who are new to the character be able to pick this up and read it?
Yes, simple as that.
In comics from that time the heroes were in their costumes for the majority of the issue and I liked that as for me that is why I was buying the book. Of course the alter-ego is important and even an issue every now and then just focusing on that aspect I think is fine and important.
Can you tell us about the team you've put together to work on 1st Man?
I am doing all of the black and white line art and did the majority of the story. My buddy Rob Snyder, who I’ve known for over 30 years and is also a cartoonist, is helping out with the dialogue/script. The color is being done by Periya Pillay, a colorist I found through another artist, and he is doing phenomenal work. Last but so very important on lettering is a classmate of mine from the Kubert School, Steve Dutro. Steve has been in the business as long as I have and has lettered comics for almost every major publisher.
Your campaign also features a supplemental book that includes art from some heavy hitters in Comics. How did that come about, and what can backers expect from the book?
The Program Book is a 40 page book that is a behind the scenes making of 1stMan that will also feature 1stMan art by some of today’s hottest artists and the pieces most of them did were originally published in my how-to-draw book “Drawing Dynamic Comics”. I contacted each artist and asked if I could use their pieces again for this project and they all said sure! I have pieces by Adam Hughes, Bart Sears, Mike Zeck, Brandon Peterson, and Kevin Nowlan to name a few. The rest of the book will be layouts, unused art and process shots from the book.
How far along is the production of the book?
I have about 3 pages left to draw and the colorist is working on pages and my buddy Rob is scripting at the moment as well.
What do you see as the future for 1st man after this campaign?
I would love to do another campaign telling another story!
