The Younger Brother caste maintains the borders secure and restricts entry to all foreigners, primed at all times for a potential invasion, so that the Older Brothers are able to experiment and hone their magic without distractions or would-be conquers to use their magic to advance their own power.
Even though the landscape of the story is fictional and fantastic, I think most people can identify with this dilemma in some way, whether in their family life, their profession, or in the pursuit of some hobby or passion, we all have to walk that line of honoring influences without idolizing them, and making out own way without disrespecting the old ways.
Does Rokan have any powers to speak of?
Oh yes Rokan is an accomplished and talented conjurer. Classified as a druid in the Ramosi magic system, Rokan is able to summon small to medium sized monsters from parallel universes to aide him in battle. Rokan can also use conjuration to hide things in a pocket universe. This is a sort of built-in mechanism for his armor, mask, hat, and other equipment to to manifest and vanish according to when and if he needs them. This translates to a super-hero style transformation when it is time for Rokan to fight.
Last but not least, Rokan possess a rare “Dragonslayer” sword, so called because according to legend such weapons are said to gain their magical properties by being used to deliver the killing blow to ancient giant monsters, known colloquially as dragons, although most people don’t believe they ever existed. The Dragonslayer “Scowl” can control non-lethal fire constructs that Rokan can use to manipulate and control any fire close to his person, and to overwhelm and control enemies without killing them. Without the flames, the cursed blade of Scowl delivers wounds that will never heal, so a tangle with Rokan can be a death sentence if he so much as nicks you with the naked blade.
There is also a bit of a metaphoric auto-biographical aspect for me personally, as I spent most of my childhood dealing with chronic illness and bookworm-ish-assumptions that I could never be athletic, and only recently discovering sports and martial arts and understanding that I can be involved in that world too.
What would you like to see as the future for Rokan?
We have been adapting and adjusting the story that I had previously written and conceived as a novel. Every time I do a new draft of the novel, I came up with new ideas to keep the story going, so I want to release the story as a serialized ongoing comic book series. The subject matter lends itself really well to Max Headshroom’s trippy, metal style, so the characters and events that we are conceiving deserve to be represented and appreciated visually.
