I.C.U. had the chance to talk to Chimera about the latest book in his SOS series - SOS Volume 2 now In Demand on IndieGogo

SOS Volume 2 is now the third SOS book. For anyone unfamiliar, what is SOS?
SOS is a black comedy/action series revolving around three superhuman brothers. The brothers operate a monster hunting business in Brooklyn, New York after creatures from a dimension called the Abyss invade earth.

SOS Volume 1 had a great dark sense of humor to accompany the action. Will that same sensibility continue into Volume 2?
Very much so, though there will be tense moments of action and a surprise in this volume.
The heroes of SOS are definitely not your typical superheroes. What were some of your inspirations in creating them?

Funny enough the brothers, with the exception for Carnage who is in gargoyle form, had non-human appearances when I first created them.
Megus was originally Nosferatu looking, with a red bandana, and a cyborg arm. With his original design, I based him off Half-Life from the 2003 Hulk video game then added my own elements such as: a ninja turtle styled bandana, chain smoking, thunder logo T-shirt, and robot arm.
When I was 15, I started watching anime and made Megus more human. I believe I was watching “Hellsing” at the time, so his second design took elements from Alucard (spikey hair, trench coat).
Rovin was a goblin if memory serves, I based his original appearance off a Yu-Gi-Oh! Card called “Robbin Goblin” in 2004/05. He had the same fire powers then.
When I read Ultimate Spiderman, I was disappointed to learn that Ultimate Green Goblin was a literal goblin with fire powers. I changed Rovin’s appearance to more of a human form in 2010.

Carnage basically stayed the same, both personality and design wise. He was my first character I ever made with his design coming from a show I enjoyed as a kid was “Gargoyles”. In 2005 or so I made him a cocky jerk based off Flash from Justice League the animated series.
There is a lot of story in each SOS book, including the spinoff SOS: Onslaught. Is that something that's important to you?
Yes, I want people to get a lot for what they pay for, so I try to make the books look like a trade paperback with a great cover and nice spine. My graphic novels have individual chapters each with their own cover.
I believe that’s where the mainstream is headed if they want to survive. The “Three Jokers” is going to be made into three 48-page comics instead the 24 floppies you usually get. I think in 2021 DC will be releasing most if not all their stuff in 48-page formats.

Can new readers jump right into volume 2 or do they need to read volume 1 to understand what's happening?
Yes, I put a prologue summarizing what the hell is going on so readers from volume 1 will not have to re-read to understand as well as getting new readers in on the book.
Picture
What does the future hold for the SOS franchise?
I plan to do 3 volumes of what I called the “Utopian Saga” of SOS. We’ll see where we are funding wise, but I would like to work on future projects with SOS ending at Volume 3.
Though Ibai Canales and I were talking about doing a spin-off about Vigilante & Carnage (similar to Onslaught but it would be in modern day not the 90’s and it wouldn’t be as dark it would be more light hearted and comedic). I wrote an outline for the first arc and I was pleased with the results.
