I.C.U. had the opportunity to talk with Lee Byron Carver about his comic project - The Company Men: Dead, White, and Blue - Now funding on Indiegogo
Your project - The Company Men: Dead, White, and Blue is currently funding on Indiegogo. What is The Company Men?
The Company Men is a 60-page, full color action comic, set in a world of spy craft, mercenary metahumans and illegal CIA dealings in Middle East warzones. It’s Suicide Squad crossed with Body of Lies. It’s STRIKEBACK with superpowers.
Can you tell us about the team and their powers?
Writing this book was such a pure, unfettered writing experience. The characters appeared to me fully formed, with powers, names, costume and attitude right when I needed them.
Durer is the leader of the team. He emanates a continual field of freezing cold energy that he can never turn off. He has inhibitor devices implanted in his body that keep the power in check. He then channels this energy through a sidearm, creating freeze rays.
Cinder is an elemental of burning smoke and soot. He can transform into a gout of swirling, smoldering ash, choking and searing targets. He used to work as a mafia hitman, torching homes of people who crossed the mob. Born with his powers, Cinder is the only ‘pure’ posthuman in the team. All the others receive their powers from some sort of procedure or accident.
Abbot is the strongman of the team, possessing superhuman strength, spend, resilience to injury, superhuman stamina and enhanced senses. He was grown in a lab to kill Hitler at the height of WW2 and after the war has spent decades as a mercenary worldwide.
Gates is a teleporter. A master assassin, he can teleport bullets from your gun into your brain, or teleport you ten feet down, fusing you into concrete, killing you instantly. Gates is the most pragmatic and mercenary of the Company Men, with the least stakes in the group. When things get tough, expect him to be the first to cut out.
Ramjet is the latest member of the group, a rookie speedster straight out of the academy thrust into a warzone. Up close he can dodge bullets and move faster than the eye can see, at a run he can shatter the sound barrier several times over. He’s joined the team expecting to be seen a superhero, not realizing the people in the region see him and his team as the enemy.
BOSS runs the team. Not a posthuman herself, she tends to stay at base and direct the team. She has a keen tactical mind and a store of dangerous secrets she keeps close to the vest. She also has a bionic hand, the design of which allows it to act as a hacking and communications device, create a field of short lives protective energy, discharge massive electrical blasts and even block bullets.
What would you like to see as the future for The Company Men?
This comic is the first issue of three that make up the DEAD, WHITE AND BLUE storyline. After that there are three more COMPANY MEN stories I want to tell, stories that have already been scripted. There’s also a bunch of one-offs, spin offs and solo mini-series for these characters, many of which are already scripted.
There are a lot more COMPANY MEN stories to tell. The Company Men are also part of the larger Braincage universe, meaning there is potential for crossovers with all of those properties in the future as well.
