I.C.U. had the chance to talk with brothers, Saymond and Pedro about their exciting Manga project - Iridescent Volume 1 - Now funding on Kickstarter
Iridescent Volume 1 is a very ambitious and exciting project! Can you tell our readers what exactly Iridescent is?
PEDRO: Iridescent is the passionate project of two young men from Costa Rica, trying to accomplish their dreams of becoming professional mangaka and anime creators. It's a story that started as simple as stick figures and evolved into a fully fleshed story with complex characters and highly relatable conflicts. We follow a main character who is as heroic as he is flawed, and we explore his humanity as he faces opponents who have similar yet different paths and points of view.
SAYMOND: Iridescent is our original manga. The story follows Shotter Kurotachi and Emaru Diamondhart, two nemesis from rival countries. We follow their adventures as they forge their own destiny, uncovering important secrets along the way.
200 plus pages of Manga is an awful lot to produce. Did you always intend to create such a large volume?
S: Yes, our first story arc has 24 chapters in total. Naturally once we split into 3 Volumes our first Volume was always planned to cover the first 7 to 8 chapters of the story.
P: Yes. In fact, we have always dreamed of making this Manga a series, so we always kept in mind that it would be a long story
P: Yes! One of my favorite battles does not even involve Shotter, our main character. However, I would love to see how people react to ALL of the battles.
You are teamed up with co creator Pedro Blaze on this book. How did you two come together as a team?
S: We’re brothers, so things just happened naturally in a way. We've been coming up with this story since we were in our teens. After some years of growing as artists and storytellers we decided it was the right time to move forward with Iridescent.
You are offering a really unique twist with Iridescent Vol.1. An audio version of the story to go along with the comic! How did this idea come about?
S: That’s an interesting story actually. It all started because we wanted to do a motion manga out of Iridescent. In Japan anime episodes work as commercials of sorts for their respective manga, so we figured we could do something like that with the resources we had at our disposal at the time.
One of my friends just happened to know an experienced voice actor so he introduced us to him: Leraldo Anzaldua. Leraldo eventually got the role of Shotter. He also put us in contact with talented upcoming actors, so we got a few more characters cast that way. I asked around on YouTube and managed to get a few more voice actors involved.
One day one of my voice actresses, Cayla, suggested we do a casting call in a voice actors forum. She even took care of making the post and managing the submission. Long story short we got more than 100 submissions that way. And boom, that's how we got the majority of our characters cast. It's actually a little hard to believe looking back. I’m extremely grateful for all of them.
Would you recommend people listen to the audio on their first read through or should they save it for a second reading?
S: I would let the readers choose how they want to experience our manga. The audio version is really good, but they’ll need to follow the pace of the audio. Some people read a little bit faster than others so whatever fits their pace is what I would recommend.
P: I say they should listen to it on their first read, and their second, and third...and so on lol. I truly hope the audio helps take the reading experience to a level no one has ever experienced before. Of course, this may not be the preference for everyone, so readers can enjoy a more traditional reading experience without the audio and still get the full story.
With the success you've had so far, I think it's fair to say that people are excited for Iridescent. What can we expect for the future of these characters and this world?
S: We’re just getting started. Like I mentioned earlier Volume 2 and 3 are in the works. That will cover the first story arc. With that said I’m currently writing Volume 4, I’m not sure how long my second story arc is gonna be but we’ve been planning this particular arc for years. I’m actually really excited for the new characters that will be introduced in Volume 4. Let me put it this way, there will probably be cameos or Easter eggs in the first 3 volumes, so you might want to pay attention to some of the characters in the backgrounds or in dialogue.
P: There is already so much planned for the near future of the Iridescent world and its characters, but our writer Saymond has far more things planned. From serialized manga to movies with theatrical releases and more. We are ambitious and plan to make Iridescent an unforgettable masterpiece.
